July 2014

Madam Chairman's Piece

The weather is definitely warming up and the gardens are bursting with colour and in the veg gardens everything is really getting going; runner beans spiralling up the poles, the baby courgettes and onions bulbing up. On the subject of onions, some of mine have gone to seed – any idea why? If you are plagued by slugs this year, don’t think they are picking on you, everyone I speak to seems to be having problems this year! (except me – I have grazing baby bunnies instead).

If you have any suggestions on any aspect covered by the Society, please tell me or one of the Committee, we welcome any new ideas.

Enjoy the Summer, and let’s hope it fries the slugs!

A Successful Plant Sale

The Spring plant sale in May went well again this year, with all the veg very popular, particularly runner beans and cucumbers. Lots of different varieties of tomatoes were available to choose from and my favourites, the “Fairy Light” chillies, sold out. I think some went to the fire station! The bedding plugs had all grown strongly this year and looked really good quality and we were able to offer them at a very good price. Thank you for your support if you purchased anything, and a special thank you to those who grew plants to donate.

Please do remember to return the bedding trays, so we will have something to grow next year's plants in (you don't have to wash them!). The money made goes towards helping run WAGS, and in particular to cover some of the considerable costs of staging the Autumn Show. In total we raised about £600 this year.

The Show Schedule comes out with this newsletter, please do take a look at it and consider entering. It is the show that brings the society members together and allows us to celebrate our successes (and share our disasters). Even if you don’t enter, we hope you will come along to see the exhibits, between 2 and 4pm on Saturday 13th September.

As always we are particularly keen to see children enter and to see those grown-ups who haven’t had a go before, as well as you seasoned entrants of course!

If you won a trophy last year, please return it to the Store, in clean condition, at the latest by Saturday 26th July (earlier is fine too!). Remember the Store is closed during August, so please don’t miss the deadline.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rowse Honey and Fugro for their very generous sponsorship of the show. Hopefully there will be other sponsors and we will thank them in the next newsletter.

See you on Show Day if not before. If you can bring us a cake to sell with the teas, that would be much appreciated as well. Please get in touch if you would like to help in any way on the day.
